As you may have guessed, Minecraft’s newest content patch, Update Aquatic, is focused primarily on newly-expanded, underwater gameplay. Many fun new features have been added, including all new blocks, items, and mobs, along with new ocean biomes rich with exciting underwater structures including shipwrecks, underwater ruins, buried treasure, and more. Sounds like fun, right? Well, if you plan on exploring the vast depths of Minecraft’s oceans, you’d better come prepared! After all, breathing is pretty important! As so much of the new content in Minecraft’s Update Aquatic is found in the game’s vast oceans, your ability to explore will be greatly inhibited by the oxygen bar. The oxygen bar appears above the health bar only when you're underwater, and will gradually deplete the longer you spend underwater.
It strikes me that none of these sunken ships went down with their treasure chest (containing the Heart of the Sea). I think it would be cool that on occasion you should find the Heart of the Sea on the sunken ship in a chest.
When the oxygen bar is completely depleted, you’ll start taking damage (approximately two hearts per second) until you eventually drown. The oxygen bar used to fully replenish instantly upon exiting water. Pretty common video game stuff. All of this was changed in the Update Aquatic, and the bar now gradually regenerates until reaching full oxygen.
Thankfully, there are numerous items and enchants that can help you stay well-oxygenated and ready to discover the wonders hiding in the depths. How to breathe underwater in Minecraft Craft Water Breathing potions with a Brewing StandPotions of Water Breathing are pretty much your best bet when it comes to staying alive underwater.
There are multiple Water Breathing potions, each granting a different duration of the Water Breathing effect. These potions can be crafted at a Brewing Stand or randomly found in treasure chests. Unfortunately, crafting the Brewing Stand is not a simple task, as it requires crafting a material made from the drop of a mob found only in the Nether. Here’s what you’ll need to get started crafting these potions:The Brewing Stand requires:. 1 Blaze Rod (dropped by Blaze in the Nether). 3 Cobblestone (mined). Potion of Water BreathingThis potion is the overall best choice for underwater breathing, as it offers the best duration.
What Does A Conduit Do In Minecraft
There are two recipes, one for a base version of the potion, which lasts for three minutes, and another that uses that potion, along with a Redstone, to create an eight minute version. Obviously, since Redstone is ridiculously easy to obtain, you’ll always want to go with the potions with the eight minute duration.Potion of Water Breathing (3:00) requires:. 1 Water Bottle. 1 Pufferfish.
1 Nether WartPotion of Water Breathing (8:00) requires:. 1 Potion of Water Breathing (3:00). 1 RedstoneHere’s where to find the materials required for crafting these potions. Water Bottle: Obtained via crafting (requires a Glass Bottle, crafted with 3 Glass, and a source of water. Pufferfish: Obtained via fishing, by killing pufferfish mobs, and can drop from Guardians and Elder Guardians in ocean monuments. Nether Wart: Gathered in the Nether, grows in nether fortresses, and may also be found in nether fortress chests. Redstone: Obtained via mining, may also be found in chests.Splash Potion of Water BreathingSplash Potions can be thrown at a player or mob to grant them, and nearby players or mobs around them, the Water Breathing effect.
You can also simply throw one near yourself to grant the effect. These may be handy if used with a potion-launching device, or if playing with other people. It’s worth noting that, unlike regular Potions, using a Splash Potion will destroy the Glass Bottle once it is used (or, in this case, thrown). It’s worth noting that the Water Breathing status effect duration is shorter on versions other than the Java Edition, such as Bedrock Edition.
In Java Edition, the effect from Splash Potions will last 3:00 / 8:00, as with the regular Potions of Water Breathing.Splash Potion of Water Breathing (3:00 or 2:15). 1 Potion of Water Breathing (3:00 or 2:15). 1 GunpowderSplash Potion of Water Breathing (8:00 or 6:00). 1 Potion of Water Breathing (3:00). 1 GunpowderHere’s where to find the material required for these potions:. Gunpowder: Obtained by killing mobs including creepers, witches and ghasts, may also be found in chests.Lingering Potion of Water BreathingLingering Potions are similar to Splash Potions, and throwing one will create a cloud with the effect that can be entered by players to obtain the buff.
Doing so will reduce the area of the potion’s effect, until it eventually disappears completely. These potions are pretty weak as they only offer short duration buffs while requiring excess materials, including the not-so-common Dragon’s Breath. We’re including them in this guide because they are technically a valid option. They can also be used to craft Arrow of Water Breathing which, although also valid, is a pretty silly way to apply a Water Breathing buff.Lingering Potion of Water Breathing (0:45). 1 Splash Potion of Water Breathing (3:00 or 2:15). 1 Dragon’s BreathLingering Potion of Water Breathing (2:00). 1 Splash Potion of Water Breathing (8:00 or 6:00). 1 Dragon’s BreathHere’s where to find the material required for these potions:.
Dragon’s Breath: Obtained by killing ender dragon in the End.Enchant a helm with RespirationThe Respiration enchant is extremely helpful, as it extends the amount of time you can breathe underwater. Your oxygen bar will still gradually deplete, but you’ll get a bit more underwater breathing time out of it. This enchant also grants a chance to avoid drowning damage, granting you a bit more time to safely surface. This is a nice enchant to have, but as it doesn’t actually grant you the Water Breathing effect, you’re still better off using Potions.
This enchant goes on a helm slot item only, and can be enchanted onto a Turtle Shell (more on those below). Helpful enchantments for underwater exploration Enchantment: Depth Strider (Foot)The Depth Strider enchant can be added to boots and increases your movement and swimming speed underwater.
Higher ranks of the enchant will increase your speed, up to normal walking speed at level three of the enchant. This enchant is obviously quite helpful, though do keep in mind it will not increase your vertical swimming speed. Enchantment: Aqua Affinity (Head)The Aqua Affinity enchantment is handy if you plan on doing a lot of underwater mining, as it removes mining speed restrictions when mining underwater.
At enchant level three, you can mine underwater at your normal, above-ground mining speed. If you aren’t lucky enough to get Aqua Affinity and Respiration on the same helmet when enchanting, don’t worry. You can combine the two enchanted items at an anvil to make an all-around great underwater exploration helmet! Helpful items and blocks for underwater exploration Trident enchanted with RiptideTridents are awesome for a number of reasons. In addition to being excellent combat weapons, they can also be enchanted with the new Riptide enchant, allowing you to propel forward when the trident is thrown.
This effect offers a great boost to your underwater movement speed. We recommend using the Loyalty enchant alongside this one, as it’ll cause your trident to automatically return to you after being thrown. Turtle ShellThe Turtle Shell is wearable item that can be equipped in the head slot. When worn, it grants a 10 second Water Breathing buff that doesn’t tick down until you’re actually underwater. The effect can be recharged by surfacing or by swimming into an underwater bubble column. Another not-so-desirable option due to the buff’s short duration, and many players value the head slot for other uses (like actual armor) too much to spend it on such an effect.
It’s worth noting that you can place a magma block underwater to create a bubble column, offering you the opportunity to recharge your Turtle Shell on the go. Just don’t get sucked in! Conduit PowerConduit blocks can be used to grant nearby players the Conduit Power status effect. Conduit Power is extremely powerful for underwater exploration and long-term development, as it prevents your breath meter from depleting, grants underwater night vision, and allows you to mine faster underwater. These effects are only applied when you’re in the range of an active conduit.Conduit systems have strict building requirements, functioning only with use of prismarine blocks and sea lanterns, both of which are obtained only in ocean monuments. Crafting a single conduit block requires one Heart of the Sea, which can be obtained in buried treasure chests, and eight Nautilus Shell, which is obtained by fishing or killing drowned. We recommend checking out the or the video below to learn how to properly construct a conduit system. It’s worth noting that this enchant directly increases your mining speed, whereas Aqua Affinity reduces the underwater mining penalty.
Both effects stack, though Aqua Affinity is overall more powerful when it comes to mining. SpongeSponges can be used to absorb water in the area. A sponge can absorb up to a maximum of 65 block of water before needing to be dried in a furnace. Once dried, the sponge can be reused. These can be handy in case of an emergency, like letting your Water Breathing run out. You can use them to create a safe, water-free pocket in the ocean. DolphinsDolphins are helpful underwater allies!
You can swim near a dolphin to receive the Dolphin’s Grace buff, which increases your underwater movement speed for five seconds. Additionally, you can feed a dolphin a raw cod and they’ll lead you to nearby underwater structures like shipwrecks for you to explore! They are neutral mobs that can be killed, so watch where you’re going with that trident!
