And now I fully intend to ruin yours.' You have exactly one fortnight, starting tomorrow morning at 6 a.m., to discover who I am.
When you succeed you must purchase one of those tiny ads at the bottom of the New York Times front page, and print my name there.' If you do not succeed, then. You will take note that the second sheet of this letter contains the names of fifty-two of your relatives. If you are unable to purchase the ad as described, then you will have this choice: kill yourself immediately or I will destroy one of these innocent people.' Until the moment he opens the letter, New York psychologist Dr Frederick Starks has led a quiet and, so he believes, blameless life. He has no idea why he's being judged by this unknown tormentor a former patient - who then lethally begins to demonstrate the potential of his, or her, threats. As the layers of Starks's carefully constructed life are stripped from him, he quickly finds himself a powerless pawn in a psychopath's devious game of vengeance.

The characters are unpredictable and they appear in the story in the most appropriate moment wich gives life to the plot.I'd recommend you to read 'The Analyst' if you are that kind of person who enjoys trying to discover who is involved in the crime, who is lying and who's not. This novel is a masterpiece in which you need to have all your senses on. Reading this took me back to the days of my youth. Perhaps you remember those days. The early days of marriage, young children, shaky foundations, isolated locations, a love of reading but limited choices.
Whatever, you paint the picture. I remember reading a book and attempting to cook dinner at the same time. Suddenly I became aware that my husband was in the kitchen and the potatoes were burning. I remember reading a book and attempting to cook dinner at the same time. Suddenly I became aware that my husband was in the kitchen and the potatoes were burning. Trust me there was little to salvage from that “meal”.This book that I read is a mass market paperback, my least favourite vehicle for the written word, and came to me as recommended and gratis from my youngest daughter’s, mother in law, a voracious reader. That aside, honestly, when given a choice, I cannot see myself picking this one up.Still there is a good story here and even though it took me a while to warm up to the protagonist, the game was definitely afoot.
Ricky, a psychoanalyst, is given fifteen days to identify his stalker or kill himself. The stakes are high and measured in human lives. If you think this is a hoax or a joke stay tuned and allow Katzenbach to convince you otherwise.Honestly for me, the writing was something of a workout. Too many words became a recurring refrain within the confines of my read.
Still a picture was indeed painted and I became invested in the outcome. The story took over and I rode out the waves. Words and all.Find yourself a comfy perch and settle in.
You are going to be a while. It was an enjoyable ride. Why the hell did I read this again? Wait, now I remember - for the same reason anyone else did. I was at an airport and wanted to read something less tiresome than the usual newspapers and magazines.

I figured out the identity of the bad guy easily enough but it did not prevent me from giving this a full and attentive read. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to write genre suspense novels. 'The Analyst' hooked me right away and I typically goof on books like this. I scanned read through all the book.
It's supposed to be a thriller, but doesn't have any kind of thrill. The author was more concentrated falling in love with the main character rather than focusing on creating a good thriller plot. A total mess. Could have been a great thriller because the story is not bad. It's sad that this kind of books are the ones read by the majority.
This book was one of the most interesting reads I've had the pleasure to experience. The plot, details, scenery, descriptions, characters, surroundings, the smoothly developed plot, and the amazing complexity of it all were a definite masterpiece. I kept reading, my eyes anxiously and nervously glued to the pages, expecting, and guessing, and guessing again, but things were never as I expected, and I was easily captured by the feelings and situations the main character was in.The first part of This book was one of the most interesting reads I've had the pleasure to experience. I was angry, sad, and flabbergasted by the tense happenings in the story. The second part of the book was enjoyable. Much more dramatic, yet systematically chilling at the same time.I loved how the author kept us guessing who Rumpelstiltskin was, and until just the very last moment he let us know. I am greatly impressed with the ingenious creation of this writer, and I definitely will keep this book stored in my memory whenever someone asks me for an amazing psychological thriller. 5 huge stars. Remember that somewhat twisted fairy tale known as Rumpelstiltskin? You know, it starts when a poor miller tells the King that he has a daughter who can turn straw into gold. The greedy King decides to put this to the test and gives the maiden until morning to spin a room full of straw into gold – if she is unable to do so, she will die. Hopeless in her task, the maiden is surprised when a troll-like man enters her tower and offers to help her.

With a price of course! After she gives the troll all her material possessions, she is forced to offer him her first child once she becomes Queen. Of course, once her son was born, she did not want to give him up. So the troll gave her 3 days to guess his name – if she did this, she would be able to keep her baby.
By some stroke of luck, the Queen’s messenger came across the troll dancing in front of a bonfire, gloating that his name indeed was Rumpelstiltskin. Thus the Queen was able to keep her baby.Dr.
Frederick Starks’ also had to discover the identity of a Rumpelstiltskin, but his path was paved with many more difficulties than was that of the Queen. Frederick Starks (“Ricky”), is a psychoanalyst who is thrust into a nightmarish version of this fairy tale when he receives a letter basically saying that if he doesn’t discover the identity of the letter-writer within 15 days, he will have to commit suicide.
If he doesn’t commit suicide, one of 52 family members whose names are included in the list will be tormented, ruined or killed. Over the course of the next 15 days, Rumpelstiltskin proves the seriousness of his threat by systematically ruining Ricky financially and professionally.Despite the fact the story was probably a bit longer than necessary (overdone description is some parts), this well-crafted and suspenseful story has more twists and turns than one can imagine and the game that Ricky is forced to play is both frustrating and intriguing. Thought provoking social commentary is made throughout the book, touching on topics such as inadequate medical care, homelessness, Internet fraud and false identities.
I also appreciated how Mr. Katzenbach referenced other literature, especially the works of Homer as well as Greek mythology (not to forget the Brothers Grimm!)This would translate really well on the big screen, just as Hart’s War did!
Although I am having a hard time casting Ricky Starks – Bruce Willis and John Travolta crossed my mind but I’m just not sure! Katzenbach and his producers will have to surprise us! The reader accompanies the protagonist along in a wild, desperate journey to saves his life, one full of secrets, revelations and discoveries, both personal and about the man who tortures him.I had never read a novel so deeply woven with the subject of psychology, and I must say that I found it deeply fascinating. Yes, this book drags a little. At the first half of it, they were parts when i wanted to skip some pages to reach the revelations, but once i got past the 50% mark or so, i just coudn't put it down.Somehow, John manages to keep the reader on the edge of the seat, to weave all the plots and subplots masterfully, to give you enough to keep reading, but not enough to make the book predictable, or give you away the ending. The side characters are masterfully done too. A first, they appear to be one-dimmensional, they are there just to 'help' the protagonist with his mission, and even then, they are enchantic, and amazing and scary, but then you get to meet them, thorugh Frederick's eyes, and part of their stories too, and suddenly this people who where covered with mist and wonder and danger are now mere mortals, and the emotion to read that change was incredible, at least for me.Frederick's journey was very well written as well. We read how he goes from being a simple man, in the middle of his fifties, to a worthy opponent in this strange game of chess.I came to feel as deeply engaged and committed in the plot as the protagonist himself. I got to sympathize with his situation, I was distressed when he got anxious, angry when he got angry, and throughout the whole book, i was desperate to reach the end.The end was amazing too.
Without a shadow of doubt, the best part of the book. It kept me biting my nails at four a.M, reading despise my sleepiness and my headache, and when it was over, I ended up lying in my bed, with insomnia, mentally reviewing the entire book, unable to believe what had happened, impressed with the way things had ended. I could never have imagined that they would be that way, or WHO was going to be the one behind everything. I had to read it several times to make sure it was real, I never would have expected it.Anyway, without a doubt a great way to start the new year, with a great book. The only reason I did not give this five stars was because it was difficult for me to get through the first half of the book, and in some places I wanted to skip pages. Still, it was worth it.Definitely recommended! As always, I'm sorry for grammar and spelling errors. 3.5 starsOkay, so the book is divided into 3 parts1st act: mysterious, thriller, edging.
You guess the connections and motives real quick but its an amazing ride. And it has the perfect ending.

It made no sense. It just left me wishing the ending came on act 1.Overall, its a good thrilling read.

I've been thinking what I could write to describe as accurately as possible the book. I like to read good reviews which are able to change my mind and make me read a book when it's good. And I'm not exaggerating. The plot was well-thought and well-developed, in every aspect of the book. Divided in three part, each of them centred on an aspect of the book (I’m sorry but I won’t reveal anything. No spoilers in my reviews). And even though I read some reviews that suggested the second part was going to be slow and tedious.
I completely disagree. I couldn’t stop reading it, without knowing what to expect next. It was surprise after surprise and I liked that a lot.The moment the name of the antagonist was revealed I scream at the tops of my lungs “I knew it”. That made me so happy. Because really I didn’t know who the hell the “bad guy” was and when I found it, it was great. Then we have the characters.
Can I say that I love Ricky, please? I know at the very first moment when you start knowing about him (I mean he is the main character, so that would be in the first page) I thought I would hate him (maybe he’s more similar to me that I would like to consider) but whilst I was reading and things were happening, he evolved. And that’s a very important aspect in every character for me. They need to be relatable if you want me to like a book.
So when with every change and plot-twist in the novel he made a decision that in some aspect I could identify to (if I was in that situation, obviously), it made him more likeable, in some strange sense. And I like that, a lot.And then we have Virgil, Rumpelstiltskin and Merlin. I won’t say many things about Merlin. He was necessary, but I didn’t like him. But, but, but, the other two were like the best thing John Katzenbach could have ever done with this book.
Mainly due to Rumpelstiltskin being the one who sent the letter to Ricky at the start of the novel. But the true antagonist was and will always be Virgil.

(The latter I still love by the way:) )Anyway so I was on the attic (which is a mess with lots of old stuff I need to throw away) and looking at some old books where I discovered Strafkamp which is the translation of Hart's war. Then my heart began bouncing faster. OMG Perhaps this author had written more books that back then were not yet translated? So I ran to my laptop and began the search and bingo. There are quite a few i have not yet read but this one was one of the ones that was rated the highest(and rightly so)Really enjoying it. The suspense, the tension, the despair.Update 09 April 2016.Finished this morning and OMG how I enjoyed this book. It has been too long since I read a good thriller.
At least a few months and because I did not know what to expect it was so intriguing to see what was going to happen.Normally I do not have the patience for whodunnits and detectives and I see some reviewers thought this book slow, but weirdly enough I did not have that feeling at all. Every night I could not wait to read more and see what was going to happen.Perhaps if I had read more thrillers I would not be so enthusiastic but because I did not I am going to give it 5 stars just because I had so much fun reading it.

I had no clue about anything and the ending took me rather my surprise. Not to be over dramatic, but if this isn't the best book I have ever read, I don't know what is. I'm serious, best ever, numero uno, go to the front of the line.
This is why I love GoodReads so much, finding a new author whose book just blows you away. A psychological drama that leaves you breathless.
